Regional Mutton Bustin Competition

Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Roundup (ARCR) presents the first annual ARCR Regional Mutton Bustin Tour, taking place throughout the 2008 summer months. Stops are being planned at several PRCA rodeos in Nebraska and western Iowa. Participating children will compete for a spot to participate during the Championship Round that will take place Saturday, September 27th at the Wrangler ProRodeo-Tour Omaha Round of the Ariat Playoffs.

Children between the ages of 5-7 and weighing under 55 pounds are eligible to compete at one of the qualifying rodeos, a list of these can be found online at www.rivercityroundup.org. Children may register to participate at one of these rodeos by following the sign up rules determined by each specific rodeo. At the conclusion of each participating PRCA rodeo, two qualifiers will be nominated to compete during the final rodeo performance at Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Roundup, where an overall regional champion will be crowned and receive awards.

Mutton Bustin is a fan-friendly competition, where children are placed on the back of a sheep, to see how long each can hold on riding the sheep out of a bucking chute and into the rodeo arena. Like the cowboy bucking events, time and score count. Anything goes, and usually does, as these boys and girls cling to the sheep as hard and as long as they can.

Ak-Sar-Ben’s River City Roundup is a celebration of our heritage. It is managed by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation, which has been a sponsor of the PRCA sanctioned Ak-Sar-Ben Rodeo for 60 years. The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation was established in 1895 with a mission of building a more prosperous heartland where communities can flourish and every child can succeed.
